10 days till departure....

I always seem to find that it’s hard to know how to begin something like this, should I talk to you, or maybe just pretend this is a diary to which you can be voyeurs? I have a feeling that it will end up as a mixture of the two as I will no doubt end up drifting from tense to tense and employing no continuity at all!
I'm not sure at this point how much you know about me, so I'll give you the basics.
I'm 20 years old, and after a month of training in America have decided to continue in the pursuit of a career in drilling boreholes, and finding other solutions to provide clean water for people who don't have access to it.
So, 10 days to go until I fly away to Uganda, I will be there for a year and during that time the company I am going to work with, Water Missions Uganda, www.ugandawater.com (a sub-section of Water Missions International) is going to start a contract for 50 boreholes, drilled all over Uganda. We will also be installing Living Water Treatment Systems, which are in essence miniature water purifying plants.

Having been used as a pin cushion, and enjoying the spectacle of panic I have created in my home, my feelings are currently still of disbelief that in 10 days I will be on another continent. I assume that everyone has this sense of slight fear yet utter lack of realization before long trips away from the people you love, I don’t believe until I’m on that plane it’ll hit home and I’ll realize what I’ve let myself in for!

Still, the next time you hear from me I imagine I’ll be sat sweating, (and, according to the weather forecast, apparently sheltering from a thunderstorm!) counting the various items of great importance that I somehow managed to overlook packing. I can’t guarantee exactly how regular these updates will be until I find out the situation I’m in, and how easy it is to get to a computer, but will endeavour to provide you with regular information!
